Upon graduation from Talbot School of Theology in La Mirada, California, Pastor Sung Kim and his wife Hannah were called from the sunny shores of Huntington Beach to the beautiful Great White North to serve as an associate youth pastor in the winter of 1993. What he thought was going to be an interim position has turned into a 25-year adventure.
After ministering for three-and-a-half years at Toronto Bethel Evangelical Church, Pastor Sung and a handful of believers stepped out in faith to raise up Rock Community Church in 1997. In the early years we met in homes, coffee shops and any place we could find to gather.
Soon after, we held Sunday worship services at Tyndale University College and Seminary in North York just outside of Toronto. In addition, the Lord graciously provided an office space in the city of Concord where we could meet for weekly Bible studies, prayer and fellowship
In October 2001, Rock Community Church took possession of a beautiful forested five-acre plot of land in Woodbridge, Ontario. This property held a hundred-year-old heritage home as well an old barn that was converted into a bungalow. After securing our purchase of the properties, we converted the bungalow into a beloved chapel. It was old, run down and small, but we were overjoyed to be able to call it home. It was always filled with prayer and praises to God.
After meeting in the barn-chapel for six years, the congregation was growing and we desperately needed more space. In March 2006, construction on our new chapel began. One of our recurring mottos has been: "We must put new wine in renewed wineskins; in other words, new faith is not built on old faith, new faith must be built on renewed faith." And once again the Lord was showing Himself strong on our behalf.
Awe, wonder and thanksgiving! What a joy and privilege it was to enter and dedicate our new chapel to the Lord. Surely, our eyes had not seen, our ears had not heard and our hearts had not conceived of the things the Lord had planned for us. Yet in our hearts, we knew this was only the beginning.
We are excited to continue to press on in our journey. As we are ever growing and ever reaching, we will be expanding our sanctuary, as well as adding a fellowship hall and cafe this summer. It is such a blessing to watch the Lord continually fashioning us into a community of love that is delighted and eager to share His love with all.
